As you may be aware, construction of a temporary bus interchange at Forge Island has begun in preparation for a £12m upgrade and refurbishment of Rotherham Interchange, which is expected to take around 12 months.

The temporary facility will accommodate most of the services that normally use the interchange, with additional temporary stops available on Corporation Street. Services from Forge Island will commence at the end of April with further details to follow soon.

The wider Forge Island works identified in the Town Centre Masterplan will be developed during this period with work expected to start on site in summer 2019.

Housing boost for town centre

The Council have given approval to select a housing construction partner to develop three Council owned sites; Sheffield Road car park, Millfold House on Westgate and the former Henley’s garage on Wellgate.

There has been extensive interest in the Sheffield Road and Millfold House sites which will see around 130 high design quality houses and apartments for open market sale and private rent built in a riverside location. The former Henley’s garage will be marketed for shared ownership or affordable rent and the site could deliver around 50 units.

Historic building brought back to life

One of Rotherham town centre’s hidden gems will reopen this spring, thanks to local businessman Mark McGrail.

The historic Grade II Listed George Wright Building on Snail Hill at the back of High Street will be given a new lease of life as a high quality boutique hotel complete with gin and cocktail bars, fine dining in the gallery restaurant, function rooms and secluded courtyards.

Mark McGrail, who also owns 1915 Bar & Bistro on Domine Lane, said: “We’re very keen to ensure the building is lovingly restored and keeps its original features."

Work is due to start next month on a long-awaited redevelopment project.

The £10m revamp of Westgate Chambers will see the creation of a showcase commercial, retail and residential development in the heart of the town centre.

As part of the redevelopment, two unlisted dilapidated buildings on Domine Lane will be demolished and replaced with a single building, incorporating 32 apartments with integral balconies/roof terraces and ground floor retail space. Further buildings will also be renovated each with their own individual character, providing ground floor retail, leisure and hospitality space with a further 29 apartments above.

In order to showcase the future Masterplan developments, a number of eye-catching signs will soon be installed around the town centre. This includes on Forge Island (at the entrance to the car park and the footbridge leading to Riverside Precinct), in front of the new University Centre Rotherham and at 1 All Saints’ Square.

Plans are also in place to utilise the hoardings around the former Law Courts as well as visual displays to be placed on vacant indoor market units and along the footbridge leading to Riverside Precinct.

A website to market Forge Island to potential developers has now gone live. Newforgeisland.co.uk acts as a ‘shop window’ into the town and the development opportunity available, plus key facts and visuals.

The website will play an important part in attracting a development partner to bring the Masterplan to fruition, with a deadline for expressions of interest to be submitted set for 30th March 2018. Further details on the next steps will be provided in due course.
